Published Article: Smith, Edward D. "The Unfortunate History of America's First Comprehensive Civil Rights Bill, 1875-1883. Negro History Bulletin, 47 (April-June 1984): 42-44. Describes the 5-year struggle to pass the bill, its negligent enforcement, and the Supreme Court's decision to repeal it in 1883.
Copies of, Climbing Jacob's Ladder: The Rise of Black Churches in Eastern American Cities, 1740-1877
Although the book is out of print, I have a few brand new courtesy copies that were given to me by the publisher, the Smithsonian Press, shortly after publication in 1988.

Reprint Editions from 1990 and 1998 are available from book sellers, but I propably have the only original copies with the now famous front cover photograph entitled "A Negro Congretation at Washington, 1876"
