Published Article: Smith, Edward D. "The Unfortunate History of America's First Comprehensive Civil Rights Bill, 1875-1883. Negro History Bulletin, 47 (April-June 1984): 42-44. Describes the 5-year struggle to pass the bill, its negligent enforcement, and the Supreme Court's decision to repeal it in 1883.
Copies of, Climbing Jacob's Ladder: The Rise of Black Churches in Eastern American Cities, 1740-1877
Although the book is out of print, I have a few brand new courtesy copies that were given to me by the publisher, the Smithsonian Press, shortly after publication.
